Niceness is the best currency.

Arriving in Türkiye about 7 years ago I was impressed by the hospitality. I was in Istanbul trying to set up a collaboration with a local company to expend my Belgian business. Didn’t work out but I found my wife and partner. Today I can not imagine not living in Türkiye. After the hospitality, I also learned that the local culture is one of respect and not really showing what you think. So nobody said NO to me, kept smiling and trowing Inşallahs to me like Turkish delight. Sweet but once swallowed it is gone.

As I fell in a barrel of positivity after my birth, see Obelix, I continued my path in Türkiye with a smile. I remember always my mother’s advice. With niceness, you can buy anything. Walking from home to the minibus I greeted everybody I passed with a Merhaba (hello) much to the surprise of the locals who couldn’t figure out what that yabancı (foreigner) wanted from them. The culture here is more like, you have to gain my trust, while I start with trust.

Nevertheless, I saw that with niceness I could achieve a lot and moreover, you meet other nice people like Amal Jibril in the picture above. She visited us in Urla and I forgot from where she came travelling, from Kenia or Ethiopia. She had this idea of showing the world the positive impact of Refugees. She set up a conference called Migration Jam, highlighting the positive impact of Refugees. We didn’t think twice and offered our help right away. We have partnered up with Stage-Co but more importantly, we have a great new friend, all thanks to being nice. Every day we talk about investments, growth, USP, markets, product/market and go to market. Great. But do not underestimate what you can achieve with being nice.

Perry Como, three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his work in radio, television, and music. Son of Italian immigrants in the US. When I saw the title, and most parts of the lyrics, I wondered how that would sound in the song. Perfect. To my surprise. You try to say it even without singing “Accentuate the Positive, eliminate the negative” Listen here. Just do it, singing or saying or thinking.
